MONDI's story began in 1967 in Munich, Germany; Herwig Zahm and Otto Bruestle together created MONDI Limited. When they introduced the first knitwear collection, the market was overwhelming, and lots of fashion press reported this news. At that time MONDI was comparable with the Italian brand MISSION.

In product design, quality and marketing, Herwig Zahm kept adding new elements to build a distinctive MONDI brand image. In the late 70s, chief designer Margaretha Ley (ESCADA founder) introduced and developed the concept of a unique and comprehensive fashion. Mondi has developed from a simple knit family to a worldwide global international brand in 65 countries, a true elucidation of its name originated from a Latin word "Mundi", which means world.

In the 70s and 80s, MONDI became a very popular brand in Europe. Diana, Princess of UK, became a loyal customer and was photographed in numerous occasions wearing MONDI. Thus MONDI was honor as "Royal Closet". As the brand was growing, American women traveling abroad soon discovered and began purchasing MONDI.

In 1978, MONDI was introduced to the U.S.A. The MONDI philosophy proved to be a perfect match for the American market. MONDI was considered a valued, well-respected brand and shops were opened in the most prestigious locations of the country, such as Neiman Marcus.
